Celebrating Nigerian Journalists on World Press Freedom Day

As the world commemorates World Press Freedom Day today 3rd,
May  2024, we considered it germane and essential to shine a spotlight on the invaluable contributions of Nigerian journalists to the media landscape and the  democratic discourse in our great   country, Nigeria.

We recognise the sincere and 
 unwavering dedication of the Nigerian Journalist  to the  truth, integrity, and accountability. Nigerian journalists , 
as members of the fourth estate  plays a pivotal role in shaping public opinion, holding power to account, and safeguarding the principles and ethos of democracy.

Nigeria,  best described as the giant of Africa, can boasts of a galaxy of vibrant and dynamic media personalities. The list include the likes of Dele Giwa of blessed memory who has passed on to eternal glory. We have the living Legends who are playing  profound and  unforgettable role in the  media   industry.
The Print and electronic media in Nigeria have experienced  a diverse array of vibrant elite  newspapers,, eg Daily Times, Concord, Newswatch, Tell Guardian , Vanguard, Nation, Daily Independent etc. Talking about television channels, radio stations, and online platforms is a mere repitation, Despite facing numerous challenges, including censorship, harassment, intimidation, and even physical attacks.

 Nigerian  journalists   against all odds have  continued to persevere in their pursuit of truth and justice for the betterment of all stakeholders in the Nigerian Project.

One of the hallmarks of Nigerian journalism is its fearless commitment to investigative reporting. Despite facing numerous obstacles, investigative journalists in Nigeria have exposed corruption, human rights abuses, and other societal ills, thereby catalyzing positive change and fostering transparency and accountability within the government and other institutions.

Moreover, Nigerian journalists have played a crucial role in amplifying the voices of marginalized communities, advocating for social justice, and championing human rights causes. Through a balanced  reportage, we  shed light on issues such as gender inequality, poverty, ethnic and religious tensions, environmental degradation, and access to healthcare and education, thereby fostering public awareness and galvanizing grassroots movements for positive change.

In addition to our  role  as watchdogs and advocates, Nigerian journalists are also at the forefront of innovation in the media industry. In an era of rapid technological advancement, Nigerian journalists have embraced digital tools and platforms to reach wider audiences, engage with readers in real-time, and facilitate meaningful dialogue and exchange of ideas.

However, it is essential to acknowledge that Nigerian journalists continue to face significant challenges in the exercise of their profession. Attacks on press freedom, including censorship, harassment, and violence, remain prevalent, posing a threat to the safety and security of journalists and undermining their ability to perform their duties without fear or favor.

On this World Press Freedom Day, it is imperative for the Nigerian government, civil society organizations, and the international community to recommit themselves to upholding and protecting press freedom and the safety of journalists. Safeguarding press freedom is not only a fundamental human right but also a cornerstone of democracy and good governance.

As we celebrate Nigerian journalists on this auspicious occasion, let us renew our commitment to defending press freedom, promoting media pluralism, and ensuring that journalists can carry out their vital role in society without hindrance or fear. Their courage, dedication, and resilience serve as an inspiration to us all, reminding us of the indispensable role that a free and independent media plays in fostering democracy, accountability, and social progress.

Dele Momodu: Why should Yahaya Bello surrender himself to EFCC when there is an existing injunction?

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dele Momodu, has faulted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission's conduct in its attempt to prosecute the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.  He said he had expected the anti-graft agency's boss, Ola Olukoyede, to have learnt from the cases of his predecessors, who he said were "booted out ignominiously". Kogi guber: Federal High Court dismisses Smart Adeyemi's case against Ododo, APC, says it lacks merit

...Affirms Ododo's victory  ...'Will of a few can't override will of majority' - Court A Federal High Court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), on Wednesday, dismissed a suit filed by an aspirant in the All Progressives Congress' governorship primaries in Kogi State, Senator Smart Adeyemi, against the emergence of the candidate of the party, Usman Ododo, saying it lacks merit.  Delivering judgement in the suit marked "FHC/CS/556/2023 Smart Adeyemi v. APC & 2 Ors", Justice J.K. Kogi: Anti-Corruption CSOs warn EFCC against cankerworms of previous management

Anti-Corruption Civil Society Organisations, on Wednesday, warned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, under the leadership of Ola Olukoyede, to refrain from allowing "cankerworms of the previous management left in the system" rubbish his credentials as the Head of the Commission.  The over 300 anti-corruption activists, under seven broad frontline organisations, noted that it was pertinent for them to sound an early note of warning in view of the fact that the misuse of the EFCC by political gladiators, as a veritable tool of victimization and score-settling, which they thought had been tackled, was suddenly rearing its head again.  The anti-corruption Civil Society Organisations advised the EFCC boss to sit up and stop the Commission from being accessed by "political miscreants who think EFCC is an extension of their political structures to be manipulated at will." Kogi APC Distances Self From Replacement Of National, Zonal Officers

The Kogi State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dissociated itself from news making the rounds that the National Working Committee of the party has  replaced the former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party as well as the former Zonal Organising Secretary.  The two party Chieftains resigned recently.  However, the State APC Chairman, Abdullahi Bello in a statement said he was surprised that the NEC Committee came up with strange names which didn't pass through the state chapter.  The statement partly read, “Consequent upon the resignation of the two officers from the party, the Kogi State All Progressives Congress under the leadership of the Governor, His Excellency Alh.
